May 2020. Just like us and a third of the world population, you are probably stuck at home. How do you cope with stress, lack of activity and career disruption? How do you escape negative thoughts, boredom and anxiety?
My mom draws. My sister binge watches navigation videos. I practice yoga. And I’m not the only one, judging by Adidas’ record sales of yoga mats since January...
Benefits of yoga
Last year, I joined a local yoga class in Delhi, to soothe my aching back. Incidentally, yoga brought me much more than pain alleviation. Within a few days, I started to sleep much better at night. After a month, my attention at work sharpened and my work efficiency increased. After a year, my body has strengthened. I feel more confident and relaxed in stressful situations.
Yoga offers countless benefits. For instance, athletes practice yoga to improve their flexibility and balance. Yoga experts also say that some postures boost immunity.
Yoga, union of body and mind
Indeed, yoga cannot be reduced to a mere curative therapy or a physical exercise. Founder of Iyengar Yoga school, BKS Iyengar defined yoga as a “timeless pragmatic science evolved over thousands of years dealing with the physical, moral, mental and spiritual well-being of man as a whole”.
Yoga is a combination of different types of exercises, including physical Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breathing) and Dhyana (meditation).
Who can practice yoga
Everyone! Everyone can try, regardless of their age, health condition and sports skills. Pregnant women too! Postures can be adapted to your needs and fitness condition. Indeed, concentration and alignment of the body parts count more than physical performance.
Besides, yoga is a low cost accessible practice. You can use common household objects as yoga props: a thin mat, a belt or cotton shawl, bed sheets or towels, a wooden box, a chair and your wall.
Online yoga classes
Yoga courses are booming online, with flexible timings and formats. Meeta, our passionate yoga teacher, quickly converted her studio classes into online classes on Google Meet and Zoom. You can contact her on facebook or WhatsApp, for instance. Don't miss her free online yoga class on June 21st, on Yoga Day!
There are many videos and apps too. Use them cautiously: self learning yoga without a teacher's guidance can be risky.
The Sanskrit terminology should not stop you either. This website lists yoga poses in English with its Sanskrit transcription.
